Shop local: Find tea, sweets and other holiday food gifts at area farmers markets - The Dallas Morning News

Farmers markets will be going all out Saturday and Sunday, their last days before Hanukkah on Sunday and Christmas next Wednesday. From the Four Seasons markets to Cowtown in Fort Worth, growers, food artisans and others will be bringing out their holiday best.

Here’s a sampling from Coppell Farmers Market of the kinds of goodies you’ll find:

Hazel’s Kitchen, which makes beautiful baked goods from scones to Italian rainbow cookies, has special seasonal paint-your-own cookies that come with little dots of frosting “paint” and a paintbrush.

Triple-layer holiday bark from Joe the Baker, whose real name is Joe Baker: white chocolate, dark chocolate, and more white chocolate peppermint bark, which he dresses up with pistachios, candied orange peel and sea salt. “It’s my favorite thing I make all year,” he says.

Wackym’s Kitchen’s holiday cookie flavors include egg nog, dark chocolate orange, ginger lime and mocha chocolate chip. Paul Wackym is also bringing plenty of party-friendly Hatch chile cheese nibbles and gift tin and basket assortments.

Rakkasan Tea Co. is highlighting its Ethiopian mint and Himalayan spiced chai flavors for the season. Rakkasan imports fine, hand-picked loose-leaf teas from areas of the world recovering from conflict. It’s a way the owners, both Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, give back.

River Bird Community Roasting imports coffee beans from small growers and identifies each individual farmer on the back of each package.

Sundance Gardens boasts an array of jarred products for gift-giving, but I was most intrigued by the New Mexico Red Chile Honey. It starts out sweet, says farmer Jill Holden, “and has nice heat on the back side.” She adds it to oatmeal and cornbread and dips chicken tenders in it.

Coppell still draws several farmers with fresh produce, including green onions grown in-ground at Embry Family Farm (because the weather’s been good enough) as well as items from the farm’s greenhouse. Other fresh veggies include cabbage, broccoli, lettuces, greens and red potatoes. Tree Folk Farm has an array of mushrooms plus picture-perfect broccoli and romanesco.

There’s so much more at each market ― items for giving as well as for the holiday table. Good seasonal produce selections are assured at Coppell, McKinney, and especially Cowtown.

Brandon Friedman, left, and Terrence Kamauf have launched Rakkasan Tea Company in Dallas, which imports rare teas from post-conflict countries like Vietnam, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Rwanda.
