OAKLAND — Councilman Larry Reid was at the East Oakland Senior Center Thursday morning to give out turkeys and ham but “got bored standing around” after his daughter and other volunteers said they didn’t want him lifting anything because of his bad back.
So Reid, who had back surgery two years, ventured outside. His back was about to get much worse.
Moments earlier, a police chase of robbery suspects along Interstate 880 from Fremont to East Oakland ended in the 9200 block of Edes Avenue, near the senior center and a park in the district Reid has represented since 1996. The flashing lights of a police cruiser caught his eye.
Reid said he walked over to talk to the officers when someone started shooting. “The next thing you know, pow, pow, pow,” he recalled. The cops yelled for Reid to take cover.
“I hit the curb the wrong way,” Reid said. “The next thing I know, I’m laying in the middle of the street in pain.”
Unable to move, the officers dragged the councilman behind one of the police cruisers. “They wouldn’t let me lay there, no matter how much I said don’t touch me because I was hurting so bad.”
Police arrested four people suspected of robbing a home improvement store on Boscell Road in Fremont. But they couldn’t find the person who fired off the shots around 10:10 a.m. Besides Reid’s back, there were no other reports of injuries.
A lockdown at the senior center did not put an end to the holiday food drive. About 360 turkeys, 100 hams and plenty of fixings were given out to Oakland seniors, Reid said.
On Friday, Reid said was in pain, but thanked the officers for helping him to safety. The longtime Oakland resident said it was the closest he’s been to a shooting.
“It was kind of scary,” Reid said. But, he added, “it’s no different than what my constituents have to live through everyday with gunshots. Yesterday was my day to experience it.”
Doctors gave Reid a brace and he’ll have plenty of time to rest — City Council is in recess until January. He plans to spend the holidays watching football with his family, his two Yorkies, and Smokey, his 96-pound German Shepherd.
