STAMFORD — Only two restaurants and one catering service currently have a poor rating for a health inspection from the last 40 days, according to the city’s website.
Hope Pizza received a poor rating on an inspection in late October, while Coromandel and the catering side of popular restaurant chain Garden Catering received poor ratings on inspections in November.
Garden Catering was tagged with a number of violations, including two of the four-point variety, the most severe of the health code infractions.
Those two violations include food reaching temperatures between 41 and 135 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes the items more prone to bacterial growth.
Battered fried chicken was found at 48 degrees, sliced turkey at 49 degrees, and chicken salad at 50 degrees, according to the inspection report for the chicken nugget purveyor.
The other four-point violation was due to numerous employees not washing their hands at the appropriate time, and one employee touching his/her face prior to working on food. Further, a hand sink on the premises was being blocked by several items.
A four-point violation is the most serious infraction an establishment can receive, and includes problems such as food stored or served at an improper temperature, poorly stored food, improperly stored and labeled toxic items, and lax personal hygiene among staff. One four-point violation automatically results in a poor grade, even if the restaurant receives an overall high score.
Garden Catering was also penalized for employees storing their personal items with food, as well as a container of liquid egg whites being thawed in stagnant water.
Frank Carpenteri, director of operations for Garden Catering, said keeping a clean and safe kitchen is a “top priority.”
“We are always seeking to improve our operations and look forward to working with the Stamford Health Department in the future, to help ensure we are achieving the highest standards,” he said, in a written comment.
Hope Pizza was handed a four-point violation for food temperature. Inspectors found poultry ready to be served that was cooked at 123 degrees.
They also found mold in the ice machine, another instant four-point violation and automatic failed inspection.
Hope ended up with a third four-point violation for workers not following proper hand-washing procedures, according to the report.
At Coromandel, inspectors found mold in an ice machine, an automatic failure, as well as a lack of a backflow prevention system inside the restaurant.
In all, the vast majority of eateries listed on the city’s website have the highest possible health score.
While a poor rating may sound worrisome, it takes multiple failed inspections for the city to consider closing an establishment, unless inspectors find a serious public safety risk.
Garden Catering’s catering business was last given a poor rating in March 2018. Hope Pizza has had a very good health rating for years, with it’s most recent poor rating coming in 2015.
The story is different for Coromandel, as this is the Indian food restaurant’s third poor rating this year. The restaurant also failed three inspections in 2018, according to the city’s website, and received a poor grade twice in 2017. The downtown eatery also received multiple failed scores in 2015.
When restaurants get a poor grade on an inspection, which are conducted without warning, they are supposed to be re-inspected within a few weeks. If the restaurant gets a low grade again, the owner is fined $150 and is required to appear before the city’s Health Inspection Division, where each infraction is discussed and a plan to address the problems is established.
A third violation means the business is subject to closure, at the discretion of the director of health. If the restaurant is shuttered, the owner must pay $300 to re-open.
Attempts were made to reach managers at Coromandel and Hope Pizza, but neither responded immediately to inquiries.
