Teacher Couple Dedicated to Nurturing Mountain Students - Women of China

A couple of teachers have stayed with primary school students in a remote mountainous area of northwest China's Shaanxi Province when all the rest of their colleagues have left for other places over the past few years.

Ye Shiping, 53, is a teacher at Renjiaya Elementary School in Xihe Township in the county of Pingli.

The mountainous school has experienced a sharp decrease in the number of its students since many children have followed their parents to move away in the past several years.

Meanwhile, the remaining local teachers have been transferred to other places at their own request, except for Ye.

He chose to stay behind and even invited his wife, Li Zhaoqiong, who is also a teacher, to work alongside him in the summer of 2016 when local parents approached him with pleading eyes.

Therefore, the couple became the only two teachers left to take care of the remaining 15 students.

Since then, they have been determined to devote their lives to their career to help more students leave the remote, mountainous location and explore the outside world.
