A roundup of quirky stories in the world of wine, spirits and beer.
WINE FOR ALL! Pope Francis gave a private audience to 100 wine producers and trade representatives during which he noted wine is for everyone— “not just for those who have more opportunities.” His remarks were part of an event organized by trade organization Veronafiere-Vinitaly, “The Economy of St. Francis and the World of Italian Wine.” Noting that “wine, land, agricultural skills and enterprise are gifts from God,” Pope Francis called the wine industry an “unquestionably significant reality on the Italian and international wine scene” in terms of quality and impact on business. OOPS! In Australia, some lots of a special bottling of Grey Goose, “the Northern Lights Edition,” has been recalled by the national product safety commission over concerns that the battery powering the light-up feature presents a choke hazard to children. The bottle contains a mini puck light in the punt of the bottle, which illuminates the northern lights artwork on the bottle. The commission noted the battery was not secure enough and the bottle did not contain warning information and the special package. The limited edition is available in the U.S., but has not been recalled. Source.
FLYING WINE NEWS. Following news last August that American Airlines had swapped out Champagne for Italian sparkling wine in its business class flights, the airline has now discontinued offering print wine lists to passengers in premium classes. Rather, the flight attendants serving those cabins will be the de facto wine stewards, relaying the options and recommendations. As reported by the “View from the Wing” blog and other news sources, the menu now notes “We invite you to engage with our flight attendants to learn more about the selection of wines available for your enjoyment.”
“QUITE TIRED” OF DRINKING. An Irish man’s New Year’s Eve weekend went viral, notable for the 81 pints of Guinness he consumed. The 33-year-old uber-drinker, Sean Bryan of Kilkenny, was reported saying while he didn’t have a hangover he did feel “quite tired.” It’s reported he consumed 186.3 alcohol units—more than 13 times the recommended weekly maximum amount, 17,000 liquid calories during the binge and spent more than 400 euros. It has not been reported if he was going for a Guinness World Record, but he was reported as saying he broke his personal best record of 78 pints. Source.
IRISH BLING! In more news from Ireland, a bottle of The Emerald Isle whiskey from The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. was sold to Mike Daley, an American collector of whiskey, for $2.8 million. Purported to be most expensive single malt ever sold, the Irish bottle broke a previous record of $2.7 million paid last November for a 1926 bottling of The Macallan. It was one of seven unique sets in existence and matured for more than 30 years in casks. The presentation included a walnut case with a single decanter alongside a bespoke Celtic Egg by Fabergé containing an emerald gem, a custom timepiece, also by Fabergé, and two Cohiba cigars. Source.
