Did you resolve to take better care of yourself this year? Fortunately, Vancouver has an increasing number of places serving healthy food. Grain bowl pioneer Mighty Bowl is slinging bowls, salads and smoothies from the restaurant, and classic rice and bean bowls from food trucks. The Funky Fresh Fruit truck crew is working high-powered blenders and pouring out a rainbow of smoothies and juices. There are also a couple of new spots to find tasty and nutritious eats.
Ingrid’s
Like Mighty Bowl, Ingrid’s Good Street Food & Paleo Grill made the transition from food truck to restaurant. It opened at Broadway and 17th Street in July. The menu, like the food truck, focuses on Mediterranean food and paleo-diet friendly dishes. The paleo diet was created to imitate foods eaten by our hunter-and-gatherer ancestors. This diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, lean meat, and fish.
Ingrid Kenny and her husband, John Kenny, began researching various diets when Ingrid was diagnosed with a serious heart condition years ago. Switching up her food choices healed Ingrid and led the Kennys on a journey to share their tasty bites with others.
“We’ve seen how food can heal,” Ingrid Kenny said. “Food is medicine.”
The paleo bowl ($13) is a mix of coconut riced-cauliflower and veggie-packed slaw with choice of protein (chicken, falafel or bulgogi beef). Sauce choices are cucumber dill, romesco, honey dijon, turmeric tahini, and cool and creamy tzatziki. Coconut flour and bits of shredded coconut give the riced cauliflower a rich flavor. The slaw is loaded with shredded carrot and green and purple cabbage sweetened with a sprinkling of dried cranberries.
The long list of salads includes protein-focused Bulgogi Beef ($15) and Pollo Adobo ($14), along with produce-filled Three Root Wonder salad ($9) featuring small cubes of daikon radish and long curls of spiralized beets and carrots in a light vinaigrette with sprigs of fresh dill. The #EATMOREPLANTS Wrap ($11) has turmeric-tinged falafel patties and red and green cabbage, carrots and romaine lettuce all wrapped in a giant collard leaf. The more traditional Mediterranean wrap ($11) combines grilled chicken breast, roasted beet hummus, tomato and romaine wrapped in pita.
