Authors dig into Fort Wayne history and food - wpta21.com

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - Local history that most of us can enjoy, the history of Fort Wayne food brought dozens to the Fort Wayne History Center for The George R. Mather Lecture Series today.

Two area journalists published their book “Classic Restaurants of Fort Wayne” in April of 2019 digging into these sweet and savory stories of the city’s favorite food.

“People always have stories to tell,” co-author of the book Keith Elchert said. “And we almost feel it's kind of our duty to capture those while people are still around to be able to tell them.”

“Classic Restaurants of Fort Wayne” was written by Keith Elchert and Laura Weston featuring over 70 restaurants that, they say, define the city’s delicious dining. The book includes places like Paula’s on Main, Don Hall’s and Casa restaurants.

“It’s really gratifying knowing that we've tapped into something people really care about,” co-author of the book Laura Weston said. “And I think that celebrating history is one of the most important things that we can do, and I can’t think of a better way than food."

The authors say remembering the stories of these restaurants are an important part of Fort Wayne’s History.

The lecture focused on the process of writing the book and was followed by a book signing. “Classic Restaurants of Fort Wayne” is the third book the authors have written together and is available for purchase at area bookstores.
