Last week, the much-loved burger chain In-N-Out opened its third Oregon location in Keizer, just 45 minutes south of Portland. The opening created heavy traffic and long lines, though some people may have stayed away after hearing about anticipated two-hour waits to get through the drive-thru.
In-N-Out’s arrival was far from the first time Oregonians seemed to lose their minds over the arrival of new fast-food options.
Krispy Kreme, 2003
When Krispy Kreme opened on Southeast 82nd Avenue in 2003, some people waited for more than five hours to get a taste of that sweet, glazed doughnut.
Sonic Drive-In, 2006
Oregon’s first Sonic Drive-In opened in May, 2006, in Central Point. But it was the Oklahoma-based burger chain’s arrival in Hillsboro later that year that sent Portland-area fast-food fans into a fury. The 1,700-square-foot restaurant in the Crossroads at Orenco Station development featured carhops and the chain’s signature footlong Coney Island hot dogs.
Chick-fil-A, 2016
When Chick-fil-A opened on March 31, 2016, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported: “Over a hundred people camped out overnight taking part in the company’s signature 24-hour pre-opening party, and the first 100 people in line win free Chick-fil-A meals for a year.”
Cracker Barrel, 2017
When the 644th Cracker Barrel location opened in Tualatin on April 17, 2017, aficionados of the Southern-themed restaurant and its front porch were very excited. Possibly no one was as excited, however, as Ray and Wilma Yoder of Goshen, Indiana, who traveled to Oregon later that month, to keep their record of visiting every single Cracker Barrel in existence.
