If your New Year Resolution is to get fit, a new study out of the U.K. is suggesting "exercise advice" on food labels to help combat obesity and encourage weight loss.
While this could be a great way to get people moving, some worry it may do more harm than good.
"It's sort of like paying penance; I had this and now I have to do something to fix that and get rid of that," said Holly Lowery, communications and education director, Ophelia's Place.
The study suggests putting the amount of exercise needed to burn calories for a certain food item on the label. The label for a chocolate bar would include its ingredients and the amount you need to walk or run to burn it off.
"Eating a candy bar and it says you have to work out this long, I think it is gonna be a good thing, but I also think some people are going to look at it and it's going to make them more upset and depressed because they're thinking, I have to work this hard?" said Head Personal Trainer at Aspen, Matthew DeFrancisco.
Lowery added this encourages a negative relationship to food, creating a system of punishment.
"It's this ideology that if I'm taking X amount of calories in, I must burn it off or get rid of it in some capacity," Lowery said.
While the labels are not in effect yet, researchers say reviews did not take place in real-world settings, but still conclude that labeling is worth trying.
