NORTON SHORES, MI-- A new food truck park will launch this summer outside the Pointes Shopping Center in Norton Shores near the Muskegon County Airport.
The Plane Watch Food Park will allow up to eight food trucks to sell food in an area at the northeast corner of the shopping center, off US-31 and near the intersection of East Sternberg and Grand Haven roads.
The park will launch in mid-May, weather-permitting, said The Pointes co-owner Bill Cooper, and will have picnic tables, portable restrooms, and all utilities for trucks to use.
“They just drive in, plug in, and go,” said Cooper.
If the initial launch of the park is successful, the Pointes owners intend to open a bar area and install permanent bathrooms and larger entertainment areas, Cooper said.
“Phase one is we want to get it open,” he said. “Our intention for this long-term, if it goes well, is to make it a place for people to come and hang out, play corn hole or giant chess games, watch planes land and take off,” and maybe offer live music.
Vendors interested in establishing a presence at the food park can apply through AMG Business Center by calling 231-799-4801. They can rent a space for $30 per day, with all utilities included, and retain a space for anywhere between a week and the entire season.
The owners will be evaluating applications based on maintaining a balance of cuisines at any given time.
“We can’t have six barbecue trucks,” said Cooper. “We have to have a good variety.”
Cooper added that there’s been substantial interest in what he described as a “cottage industry” of food truck purveyors. Within the last four or five months, he and his partners determined that the interest was strong enough to make this concept work.
The Pointes Shopping Center is situated amidst a regional mall shopping corridor, and is home to restaurants, stores, offices, and a fitness center. Cooper and his partners purchased it last year, and are now in the process of securing additional tenants. Recent newly-announced additions including a pet grooming business, brewpub, and a discount appliance outlet.
In May, a sign announcing a possible Steak ‘n Shake location sparked social media excitement, but that space remains empty. “It’s not not going forward,” Cooper told MLive, adding that the site is approved for the popular chain, but that the Pointes ownership is still looking for someone to take on the franchise.
